When you don’t take proper care of your teeth, gums, and mouth, diseases and infections can cause pain and even decay of the teeth. However, at Zysik Dental, our dentist in Potsdam specializes in various tooth decay treatments that can help alleviate the pain, and restore the affected tooth or teeth back to normal.
Your dentist in Potsdam, Dr. Zysik, knows that decayed teeth can be incredibly uncomfortable and painful, and can actually cause long-term damage. That’s why our practice offers two of the most common procedures for tooth decay treatment. When decay in a tooth has become so advanced that large portions of the tooth must be removed, crowns are often used to restore the tooth. Crowns are fabricated in a laboratory and are made either of porcelain baked onto a metal substrate, all-porcelain, or many of the new ceramic materials that have been developed. Crowns are also typically used to restore a tooth's function and appearance following a restorative procedure such as a root canal. Root canal therapy is needed when the nerve or pulp of a tooth is affected by decay or infection. Symptoms of the infection are generally acute dental pain or sensitivity to hot, cold or percussion. During root canal therapy, the injured or diseased pulp is removed and the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and sealed. Dental fillings can also be used on teeth damaged by tooth decay. Newer dental fillings include ceramic and plastic compounds that mimic the appearance of natural teeth. These compounds, often called composite resins, are usually used on the front teeth where a natural appearance is important, but they can also be used on the back teeth depending on the location and extent of the tooth decay.
